Stop Lists in eDiscovery: “Wah waah wah waah wah wah!”

“To be or not to be…”

This line from Hamlet is perhaps William Shakespeare’s most famous quote. This iconic and instantly recognizable phrase is also, famously, entirely composed of stop words.

In eDiscovery terms, stop words are very common small words—such as a, the, an, and and—that are typically left out of search indexes because they’re likely to cause a large number of false hits and misses.
